This is an original Japanese poster from the first release of A Place in the Sun in 1951.
It is the first time we have seen this poster in Japan and believe that it has not sold in any of the major western auctions.
This almost 5′ tall STB poster features fantastic artwork. The tatekan STB format had much lower print numbers compared to regular Japanese B2s. They are very rare, especially for more popular film titles, and are highly sought after by collectors today.
This film was directed by George Stevens and stars Montgomery Cliff, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelly Winters. It is based on Theodore Dreiser's 1925 novel, An American Tragedy, and the 1926 play of the same name. The film tells the story of a working-class boy who gets a job working for his wealthy uncle. The young man gets entangled with two beautiful women, resulting in a tragic outcome. This film was a big success at the time of release and won six Academy awards.
