“AKIRA” (アキラ), Original Japanese Movie Promotional Poster c. 1987–88, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) — T204

Sale price $725.00

This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster for AKIRA, Katsuhiro Otomo’s landmark animated feature, adapted from his own manga. Featuring the celebrated image of Kaneda holding a laser cannon, this striking design captures the intensity and extraordinary visual detail that made AKIRA a defining work of anime and cyberpunk cinema.

Film background
Set in Neo-Tokyo in 2019, the film follows teenage biker Kaneda and his friend Tetsuo, whose emerging psychic abilities draw them into a secret military programme. As Tetsuo’s powers become increasingly destructive, Kaneda finds himself confronting a threat that could engulf the entire city.

Released theatrically in Japan in 1988, AKIRA combines meticulously realised urban landscapes, kinetic action and an unsettling exploration of power, alienation and scientific ambition. Its international success helped introduce Japanese animation to a much wider audience.

Poster design
Kaneda stands at the centre in a vivid orange-red jacket, gripping the bulky laser weapon as its cable curves across his body. Behind him, industrial pipework and densely packed buildings create a richly detailed vision of Neo-Tokyo.

A strip of colourful animation images runs along the upper edge, contrasting with the muted architectural background. Across the lower portion, red アキラ brush lettering overlays the enormous black AKIRA title. The compact creator/director credit beneath leaves much of the cityscape unobstructed, giving this version a particularly strong emphasis on the artwork.

Condition
Excellent+. There is some light handling wear and minor edge creasing, visible in the detailed photographs. The colours remain strong and the central artwork presents beautifully.
