“Akira” (アキラ), Original Japanese B5 Chirashi Mini Poster / Flyer 1988, “Neo Explosion” Style, B5 Size (18.2 × 25.7 cm) Q123B

This is an original Japanese B5 chirashi mini poster / theatre flyer printed in 1988 for the Japanese theatrical release of Akira (アキラ), Katsuhiro Otomo’s groundbreaking animated cyberpunk masterpiece. Compact in scale but highly impactful, this “Neo Explosion” design features one of the most dramatic images associated with the film: Neo-Tokyo disintegrating around a dark, glowing central sphere, with Tetsuo’s eyes looming behind the monumental AKIRA title.

Akira (1988) is a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk action film directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, produced by Ryōhei Suzuki and Shunzō Katō, and co-written by Otomo and Izo Hashimoto. Based on Otomo’s own manga, first serialized in 1982, the film set new standards for Japanese animation with its extraordinary density of detail, fluid movement, and dystopian vision of Neo-Tokyo. It remains one of the most influential animated films ever made, helping to define global perceptions of anime and cyberpunk cinema.

This B5 chirashi carries the same explosive visual language as the larger theatrical campaign, but in the highly collectible Japanese flyer format. The front artwork presents the film as an overwhelming visual event, with the tagline:

「もう始まっている、もう止まらない…」
(“It has already begun. It cannot be stopped...”)

The verso contains Japanese promotional text, staff and voice-cast information, monochrome stills, and character artwork, including Kaneda on his motorcycle, Tetsuo, and other central imagery from the film. The large release line at the bottom reads 「夏休み東宝洋画系ロードショー！」, promoting the film’s summer Toho theatrical roadshow release.
