“Akira” (アキラ), Ultra-Rare Original Japanese Bookstore Display Poster / Young Magazine Promotional “Neo-Tokyo Collapses!! — PART 3” Speed Poster (B2 Variant Cut Vertically) 1986, Size (c. 72.8 × 36 cm) P188

Sale price $1,750.00

This is an original Japanese bookstore display poster issued by Kodansha to advertise AKIRA PART 3 (the third tankōbon). Produced for Young Magazine point-of-sale in 1986, it is the scarce long format— vertically for bookshop display.

Ultra-rare: Pieces of this type are virtually never offered for sale. What makes this example even more desirable is that is was never folded (the only other example we handled was machine folded as issued).

Across the top the sheet shouts: 「ネオ東京崩壊!!」 (Neo-Tokyo collapses!!) with the banner 「待望の第3巻・絶賛発売中!!」 (The long-awaited Vol. 3—now on sale!!).
At the foot, a bold band reads “AKIRA BY OTOMO KATSUHIRO — PART 3〈アキラーⅡ〉” with sales specs: 「描きおろしカバー/巻頭カラー8ページ/B5判290ページ/定価880YEN」, plus Young Magazine and 講談社 marks and the note 「アキラ既刊—第①巻・第②巻—好評発売中!」.
Blank verso (as issued).

Akira (1988) is Katsuhiro Otomo’s epoch-defining post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk landmark—based on his manga that began in 1982 in Young Magazine. Its world-building and animation reshaped anime and global pop culture; these mid-’80s bookstore posters come from the manga era that built the phenomenon.

Poster design

A blazing red field, ringed with saw-tooth spikes, frames Otomo’s kinetic illustration: a street firefight tears through Neo-Tokyo—tank barrel thrusting into frame, rubble exploding, and our protagonists mid-action. The colossal AKIRA wordmark and PART 3 block at the base hammer home the release, while bilingual elements (English title with Japanese sales copy) capture Young Magazine’s urgent, high-impact graphic language.

Why collectors prize this example

Bookstore Speed poster tied directly to the 1986 tankōbon release of PART 3—far scarcer than theatrical or video-shop material.

Printed in very small numbers for in-store use; most were discarded—survivors are exceptionally rare.

From a long-time Japanese Akira / Otomo collection—holy-grail-level material that is almost never on the market.
