AQUIRAX UNO KALEIDOSCOPE / 宇野亞喜良*万華鏡 (2022–23)
An original poster for one of the most elegant recent exhibitions devoted to Uno’s work. According to the official Ginza Graphic Gallery text, the first-floor exhibition presented around 20 original works themed around haiku and girls, brought to life through specialized print design by Junko Tsuda, while the basement displayed around 50 posters from the 1960s with the cooperation of Kariya City Art Museum. The poster itself beautifully reflects that world: a dreamlike girl, a black cat, fluid manuscript lettering, and bold KALEIDOSCOPE typography combine into a striking contemporary Japanese design image.
One of Japan's most distinctive illustrators and graphic designers - the celebrated Akira Uno / Aquirax Uno.
Official profiles note that Uno was born in Nagoya in 1934, studied design, worked for Calpis, Nippon Design Center, and Studio Ilfil before becoming freelance, and rose to prominence through advertising, theater posters, picture books, and the underground theater scene, including work associated with Shuji Terayama. He received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1999 and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in 2010.
