“Alice in Wonderland” (ふしぎの国のアリス), Original Japanese Home Video Promotional Poster 1987, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) N128A

Sale price $225.00

This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster printed in 1987 for the first Japanese home video release of Walt Disney’s Alice in Wonderland (ふしぎの国のアリス). Distributed in Japan through Bandai Video Network and Walt Disney Home Video, this poster represents an important early moment in Disney’s Japanese home entertainment history.

Film background
Originally released in 1951, Alice in Wonderland is one of Walt Disney’s most visually inventive animated features, adapted from Lewis Carroll’s classic stories Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. The film follows Alice as she enters a surreal world of talking animals, riddles, disappearing cats, impossible directions, and dreamlike logic.

By the late 1980s, Disney’s animated classics were beginning to reach Japanese audiences in a new format through premium VHS and Beta releases. This poster was produced for that home video campaign, making it a highly collectible piece of Japanese Disney retail ephemera rather than a standard theatrical poster.

Poster design
A vivid and beautifully coloured Japanese promotional design, centred on Alice lost in Wonderland’s strange forest, surrounded by nonsensical signposts and key characters including the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit, and the Mad Hatter. The purple and pink woodland palette gives the poster a richly atmospheric quality, while Alice emerging from the teapot at the lower centre creates a charming visual anchor.

The large pink Japanese title ふしぎの国のアリス appears prominently at the top, with the English title Alice in Wonderland beneath it. The yellow headline reads:

「魔法の扉をあけてごらん、ドキドキ、ワクワク、さあ不思議の国へアリスと一緒にでかけよう。」

This translates as:

“Open the magic door — heart-pounding, exciting — come, let’s go with Alice to Wonderland.”

At lower left, the poster includes the original home video specification block, listing the film as a 75-minute colour Hi-Fi stereo release, with both VHS and Beta catalogue numbers. The printed retail price of ¥10,800 reflects the premium cost of Disney home video in Japan during the 1980s.

The lower margin includes the Bandai Video Network logo at left and the vintage Walt Disney Home Video mark at right, confirming its original Japanese retail release context.

Rarity and significance
This is not a later decorative Disney reprint, but an original 1987 Japanese home video promotional poster. Early Japanese Disney VHS / Beta advertising material is increasingly collectible, particularly examples connected to major animated classics.

For collectors of Disney animation, Japanese home video history, Alice in Wonderland, and 1980s retail poster design, this is a particularly charming and historically interesting piece.
