“Alien” (エイリアン), Rare Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1979, Japan-Only Style, B1 Size (c. 72 × 103 cm) HAK-A

This is an original Japanese B1 theatrical poster produced for the first Japanese release of Alien in 1979. Directed by Ridley Scott and starring Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley, the film united claustrophobic horror, industrial science-fiction design and H.R. Giger’s biomechanical creature imagery to create one of the defining works of modern genre cinema. Alien opened theatrically in Japan on 21 July 1979, distributed by 20th Century Fox.

Design

This is the exceptionally rare Japan-only cast-montage design, entirely different from the internationally familiar cracked-egg artwork. Against an immense black star field, the crew of the Nostromo emerges along a pale planetary horizon, with Ripley dramatically enlarged at the lower right. Her expression of alarm gives the composition an immediate human focus while subtly anticipating the character’s central place within the film.

Above the cast, a spacecraft drifts beneath a luminous band of stars, while violent bursts of red and white puncture the surrounding darkness. A small inset at the lower left depicts the Nostromo’s futuristic bridge and is accompanied by the 70mm Dolby Stereo mark, emphasising the film’s premium theatrical presentation. The combination of photographic montage, cosmic abstraction and sharply scaled typography is unmistakably Japanese in its promotional intensity.

Across the top appears the film’s legendary campaign line in enormous blood-red characters:

「宇宙では、あなたの悲鳴は誰にも聞こえない。」
“In space, no one can hear you scream.”

The monumental red エイリアン title dominates the lower portion of the sheet, creating a powerful graphic echo between the warning above and the film title below. Unlike the restrained international campaign, this Japan-exclusive artwork presents Alien as an expansive cosmic spectacle while retaining its atmosphere of isolation, dread and unseen danger.

Rarity

Japanese B1 posters were generally printed in far smaller quantities than the standard B2 format and were intended for larger, more prominent cinema displays. Surviving first-release B1s are consequently much harder to find, particularly for internationally collected titles such as Alien.

This Japan-only first-release cast design is itself considerably less frequently encountered than the famous egg artwork, while original examples in the substantial B1 format are exceptionally elusive. The combination of first-release status, rare alternate Japanese artwork, large-scale presentation and excellent preservation makes this a major display piece for collectors of science-fiction, horror, Ridley Scott, Sigourney Weaver and landmark Japanese film advertising.

Condition

Excellent condition overall, with deep, rich blacks, vivid red typography and strong photographic detail. There is only light age-related handling and minor edge wear, including a small amount of wear along the upper-left edge, together with a few shallow surface impressions visible under close inspection. These do not detract from the poster’s exceptionally strong appearance when displayed.
