“Amazing Stories” (世にも不思議なアメージング・ストーリー), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1987, Horizontal Design, B2 Size (73 × 51 cm) — T250

Sale price $165.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1987 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Amazing Stories. Presented in an unusual horizontal format, this distinctive Japanese design makes its spectacular title lettering the centrepiece, combining vibrant colour with a deep black background.

Film background
Drawn from Steven Spielberg’s television anthology series, the theatrical compilation brings together three stories spanning fantasy, comedy and horror: “The Mission,” directed by Spielberg; “Mummy Daddy,” directed by William Dear; and “Go to the Head of the Class,” directed by Robert Zemeckis.

Released through Universal and UIP, the programme captures the imaginative spirit of Amblin’s 1980s output, moving from wartime suspense to a frantic mummy comedy and a sinister supernatural tale.

Poster design
Enormous, dramatically curved Japanese title lettering sweeps across almost the entire width of the sheet. Its angular characters contain mottled washes of hot pink, red, orange, yellow, green and blue, edged in white to stand out against the black ground. The effect is exuberant and theatrical, with the lettering itself providing the movement and spectacle.

Small portraits of Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis sit below the title, above three neatly divided panels naming the individual stories and their directors. Universal and Amblin logos occupy the upper-right corner, while the bright pink 「夏休みロードショー!」 announcement promotes the summer theatrical engagement.

A particularly striking example of Japanese title design, with a wide composition that gives the colourful typography exceptional display presence.
