"Art Now: Aquirax Uno", Original Japanese Contemporary Art Poster 1975, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) B247

Sale price $300.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1975 to promote “Art Now” (現代の美術), designed by the acclaimed graphic artist Aquirax Uno (Akira Uno / 宇野亜喜良).

Artist background
A pillar of Japan’s 1960s–70s avant-garde, Uno fused fashion-illustration elegance with surreal, often erotic collage. A frequent collaborator with Shūji Terayama and Tenjō Sajiki, his work helped define the visual language of Japan’s underground theatre and counterculture. His later output spans album art (e.g., BUCK-TICK), installations, and picture-book reimaginings, all retaining his signature sinuous line and dreamlike symbolism.

Poster design
A quintessential Uno fantasy-surreal tableau: a pale, bald figure in a black cloak steps across an Edo-style landscape, its elongated limbs ending in a hand that grips a single green eyeball. A luxuriant collaged coiffure erupts from the figure’s side, pierced by a red star. Below, a lizard-child hatching from an egg perches atop a second egg—recurring birth/rebirth imagery in Uno’s oeuvre. The lavender rhombus cartouche reads “art now / 現代の美術 全12巻・別巻1 講談社版,” confirming the series and Kodansha imprint. Delicate screen tones and muted greys contrast with the sharp, pop accents—classic Uno.
