This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1985 for the first theatrical release of Back to the Future (バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー), Robert Zemeckis’s landmark time-travel adventure and one of the defining popular films of the 1980s. Produced under the Steven Spielberg / Amblin banner, the film stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, Thomas F. Wilson, and Claudia Wells.
Original Japanese posters for Back to the Future are highly collectible, and this first-release B2 is especially desirable for its dynamic Japanese campaign layout, combining the iconic DeLorean imagery with multiple film stills and bold local typography.
Film background
Released in 1985, Back to the Future follows teenager Marty McFly, who is accidentally sent from 1985 back to 1955 in the DeLorean time machine created by the eccentric Doc Brown. Trapped in the past, Marty must make sure his future parents fall in love while finding a way back to his own time.
The film became an immediate international success and remains one of the most beloved science-fiction adventures ever made. Its blend of comedy, romance, suspense, rock-and-roll energy, and ingenious time-travel storytelling helped launch one of cinema’s most enduring franchises.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 uses a superb, highly energetic montage design. At the centre, Marty McFly stands beside the open gull-wing door of the DeLorean time machine, checking his watch as flames streak across the ground beneath him. The glowing car, fiery tyre tracks, and dramatic circular backdrop give the composition a strong sense of speed, danger, and wonder.
Around the central image are sepia-toned and colour stills from key moments in the film, including the 1955 dance sequence, Marty with his parents, the DeLorean at night, and Doc Brown with the time machine. These surrounding images give the poster a narrative richness that is distinctly characteristic of Japanese theatrical advertising.
The large red Japanese title logo バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー dominates the lower section, with the English “BACK TO THE FUTURE” embedded inside the arrow motif. The right-side Japanese copy announces:
「スピルバーグがまたやった!本年度全米No.1ヒット作品!!」
“Spielberg has done it again! This year’s No. 1 hit in America!!”
The result is a bold and highly displayable first-release Japanese poster for one of the most iconic films of the 1980s.
