“Basic Instinct” (氷の微笑), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1992, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA530
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1992 for the Japanese release of Basic Instinct, Paul Verhoeven’s landmark erotic thriller starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone.
Few Hollywood thrillers of the early 1990s made a greater international impact. Stylish, provocative, and instantly recognizable, Basic Instinct became one of the defining studio films of its era, and this Japanese poster captures that atmosphere with exceptional graphic force. Bold, minimal, and highly displayable, it is one of the most striking Japanese designs produced for a major American film of the decade.
Film background
Released in 1992, Basic Instinct follows San Francisco homicide detective Nick Curran, who is assigned to investigate the brutal murder of a wealthy rock musician. His prime suspect is Catherine Tramell, a brilliant and enigmatic crime novelist whose fiction appears to echo the details of the killing. As the investigation deepens, suspicion, erotic tension, and psychological manipulation become inseparable.
Directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Joe Eszterhas, the film became a major worldwide success and a defining moment in 1990s thriller cinema. It also transformed Sharon Stone into an international star, while its controversial subject matter, icy tone, and sharply controlled visual style gave it a lasting place in popular culture.
Poster design
The Japanese design is remarkably strong and graphic, built around a high-contrast, almost screen-printed image of the two leads locked in an embrace. Sharon Stone’s face and gaze emerge from behind Michael Douglas, confronting the viewer directly, while the surrounding field is rendered in a dense, textured crimson red that heightens the sense of danger and seduction.
The centre is dominated by the large English title “BASIC INSTINCT”, printed in a long, elegant gold typeface, dramatically bisected by a sharp vertical wedge suggestive of an ice pick. The Japanese title 氷の微笑 appears at the lower right in a flowing, blade-like white script, adding further visual tension and sophistication.
The principal Japanese tagline at upper left reads:
「そのとき、女は美しい凶器。」
“At that moment, the woman is a beautiful weapon.”
A secondary line above the Japanese title reads:
「セクシーで、アブなくて、シビれるような快感。」
“Sexy, dangerous, and thrillingly intoxicating.”
The result is a poster of great visual economy and impact—an especially compelling Japanese interpretation of one of the most iconic thrillers of the 1990s.
