“Batman” (バットマン), Very Rare Original Promotional Poster from the 1989 First Theatrical Release, Batman and Batmobile Design, Landscape Format ZA1261
A very rare original promotional poster from the time of the first theatrical release of Tim Burton’s Batman in 1989. The landscape photograph pairs Michael Keaton in the Batsuit with the 1989 Batmobile, its turbine nose turned towards the viewer. A small © 1989 DC Comics Inc. credit appears at the lower right.
In Excellent condition. The black costume and bodywork retain their shadow detail, with the yellow chest emblem and copper-gold title standing out clearly.
Film background
Burton cast Keaton as Bruce Wayne opposite Jack Nicholson as the Joker. While photojournalist Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger) investigates reports of a masked figure in Gotham, Batman confronts a criminal who wants the whole city to know his name. Warner Bros. released the film in Japan on 2 December 1989.
The Batmobile was central to Burton’s vision of Gotham. Working with production designer Anton Furst, concept artist Julian Caldow developed the car’s long, low silhouette. The aircraft-like intake and sweeping front wings are especially clear in this photograph.
Poster design
Keaton stands at the far left, his cape falling almost to the ground. A narrow line of light traces its edge and picks up the curve of the Batmobile’s front wing. The car fills most of the lower half of the sheet, leaving a broad field of black above it. At the upper right, the oval bat emblem sits over the English BATMAN title in bevelled lettering. The only other text is the small rights credit, giving the photograph the full width of the poster.
