“Battle Royale: Special Version” (バトル・ロワイアル 特別篇), Original Japanese Theatrical Movie Poster, 2000 Film, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q218
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for Battle Royale: Special Version (バトル・ロワイアル 特別篇), the special theatrical version of Kinji Fukasaku’s landmark 2000 film Battle Royale. Based on the novel by Kōshun Takami, the film stars Tatsuya Fujiwara, Aki Maeda, Tarō Yamamoto, Chiaki Kuriyama, Kō Shibasaki, Masanobu Andō, and Beat Takeshi.
Original Japanese posters for Battle Royale are highly collectible, and this Special Version design is especially desirable for its stark class-photo composition, powerful red title treatment, and direct connection to one of the most controversial and influential Japanese films of the early 2000s.
Film background
Directed by Kinji Fukasaku, Battle Royale imagines a dystopian Japan in which a class of junior high school students is forced by the government to fight to the death on an isolated island. Violent, satirical, and politically charged, the film became a major cultural flashpoint on release and remains one of the most internationally recognised Japanese genre films of its era.
The film’s influence has been enormous, shaping later survival-game narratives in cinema, manga, television, and popular culture. It is also remembered as one of Fukasaku’s final major works, combining youthful rebellion, state violence, black humour, and brutal social critique with the director’s characteristic intensity.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 design is exceptionally striking. The upper half is composed of monochrome student portrait photographs arranged like a school class register, each face looking directly outward. The repetition of these youthful faces creates an immediate sense of unease, especially when contrasted with the film’s violent premise.
Across the centre, a red blood-splatter graphic carries the chilling line:
「神様、冗談だったら、やめてください」
“God, if this is a joke, please stop.”
The lower section is dominated by the huge red-and-black title バトル・ロワイアル, with SPECIAL VERSION / 特別篇 printed beneath. At lower centre, the poster includes the pointed copy:
「祝 中学卒業」
“Congratulations on graduating junior high school.”
followed by text addressing those who were just third-year junior high students and could not see the film at the time. This gives the poster a particularly sharp, provocative edge, directly playing on the film’s age restriction and school-age subject matter.
The result is a superb Japanese campaign design: minimal, confrontational, and conceptually precise. It communicates the film’s horror not through action imagery, but through the faces of the students themselves.
