“Battle Royale: Special Version” / 「バトル・ロワイアル 特別篇」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 2001, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) S229
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the 2001 Japanese release of Battle Royale: Special Version, the expanded edition of Kinji Fukasaku’s controversial dystopian thriller.
Featuring a grid of student portraits, stark red title lettering and a deliberately provocative graduation message, this design captures the unsettling contrast between ordinary school life and the film’s brutal premise.
Film background
Directed by Kinji Fukasaku, with a screenplay by Kenta Fukasaku adapted from Koushun Takami’s novel, Battle Royale follows a class of junior high-school students forced into a government-controlled survival contest.
The principal cast includes Tatsuya Fujiwara, Aki Maeda, Taro Yamamoto, Takeshi Kitano, Chiaki Kuriyama, Ko Shibasaki, and Masanobu Ando.
Following the original film’s success, the Special Version reached Japanese cinemas on 7 April 2001, distributed by Toei. It incorporated previously unseen material and newly filmed scenes, expanding the characters’ backgrounds and relationships.
This poster belongs specifically to that expanded edition’s theatrical campaign.
Poster design
The upper section is organised around 42 monochrome student portraits, arranged in six rows of seven. The tightly ordered grid recalls a school yearbook, while the students’ serious expressions and visible collars introduce the threatening circumstances of the story.
Across the portraits, bold white lettering with dark outlines reads:
「神様。冗談だったら、やめてください」
“God, if this is a joke, please stop it.”
A red blood-splatter motif interrupts the photographic grid, providing a sharp contrast to its otherwise formal arrangement.
Below the portraits, the Japanese title:
「バトル・ロワイアル」
appears in enormous red characters outlined in black. The director credit 「深作欣二監督作品」 identifies it as a film directed by Kinji Fukasaku.
Immediately beneath the title, the wording:
“SPECIAL 特別篇 VERSION”
clearly identifies the advertised edition. A tilted grey “BR / SURVIVAL PROGRAM” emblem reinforces the fictional programme’s institutional identity.
The lower section leaves a substantial area of pale background around the campaign’s most distinctive message:
「祝 中学卒業」
“Congratulations on graduating from junior high school.”
Below this appears:
「中学3年生だったばかりに、この映画を見られなかった皆様へ。」
“For everyone who couldn’t see this film simply because they were in their final year of junior high school.”
Positioned beneath the R-15 marking, this copy addresses students who had been unable to see the earlier release. Its apparently celebratory tone creates an uneasy connection between graduation, adolescence and the film’s subject matter.
Festival and award references accompany the lower billing, while oversized pale-grey “BATTLE ROYALE” lettering sits behind the credits along the bottom edge.
The combination of student portraits, forceful typography and unusually direct audience messaging makes this a distinctive piece of Japanese film advertising.
Release and format note
This is a Japanese B2 theatrical poster, measuring approximately 51 × 73 cm, issued for the 2001 Special Version campaign.
The prominently printed 「特別篇」 wording distinguishes it from advertising for the film’s original 2000 theatrical release.
Condition
Excellent+ condition.
The poster retains strong red colour, clear photographic detail and crisp lettering. Light handling creases, gentle paper undulations and minor edge wear are visible. Overall, it presents extremely well and would make an impressive framed display.
