“Bird” (バード), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1989, Clint Eastwood / Forest Whitaker, B2 Format (c. 51 × 73 cm) — M168

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1989 Japanese release of Bird, Clint Eastwood’s intimate portrait of jazz saxophonist Charlie “Bird” Parker. Originally produced in 1988, the film opened in Japan on 31 March 1989, with Forest Whitaker in the leading role.

Produced and directed by Clint Eastwood, from a screenplay by Joel Oliansky, the film explores Parker’s extraordinary musical ability alongside the difficulties of his personal life. Moving between different periods, it follows his development as a pioneering figure in bebop, his relationship with Chan Parker, played by Diane Venora, and his struggles with addiction. Whitaker’s performance earned him the Best Actor award at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival.

The poster translates the film’s musical subject into a restrained, atmospheric composition. Against an almost entirely black background, a saxophonist emerges through narrow passages of white light. His face remains largely in shadow, while the instrument’s keys, curved body and bell are sharply illuminated. Two brilliant starbursts punctuate the image, suggesting stage lights catching the polished metal during a performance.

A small white bird in flight appears in the upper-right corner, making a visual connection with Parker’s nickname. The large areas of surrounding darkness give both the musician and the bird unusual prominence, creating a sense of solitude as well as theatrical drama.

The English title, “BIRD,” is constructed from rows of golden-yellow dots, recalling illuminated lettering outside a nightclub or performance venue. Immediately beneath it, 「バード」 appears in vivid pink Japanese lettering. The same pink is repeated across the top in the prominent director credit:

「クリント・イーストウッド監督作品」
“A film directed by Clint Eastwood.”

Below the central image, a small golden-yellow line reads:

「アメリカ人の生活には、第2幕はない。」
“There are no second acts in American lives.”

Its understated placement provides a reflective counterpoint to the bright title and sparkling saxophone, echoing the film’s concern with talent, vulnerability and the course of a life.

The compact white credit block along the bottom names Forest Whitaker, Diane Venora, Lennie Niehaus, Joel Oliansky and Clint Eastwood, with Warner Bros., Malpaso and Dolby Stereo identification completing the design.

The combination of deep black, luminous white, gold and pink makes this an especially attractive example for collectors of jazz cinema, Charlie Parker, Clint Eastwood, Forest Whitaker and Japanese film advertising.
