"Faces of Death", Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1980, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) N111
This is an original Japanese poster printed for the release of Faces of Death (ジャンク 死と惨劇), directed by John Alan Schwartz (credited as Conan Le Cilaire).
Faces of Death is a 1978 American mondo shockumentary film that presents a series of staged and genuine death scenes from around the world. The film, hosted by fictional pathologist Dr. Francis B. Gröss (played by Michael Carr), explores topics including animal slaughter, human executions, cult rituals, war footage, and other graphic content intended to provoke and disturb. While much of the footage was fabricated for the production, it was interspersed with real newsreel and documentary material, blurring the lines between fact and fiction.
Upon release, Faces of Death became notorious for its extreme content and was banned or heavily censored in multiple countries, including being listed among the UK’s “video nasties.” Despite (or because of) the controversy, the film spawned multiple sequels and developed a cult following as one of the most infamous entries in the mondo film genre.
The Japanese B2 poster design is stark and provocative — dominated by a grainy, high-contrast black-and-white image of a screaming face, overlaid with bold red and grey English and Japanese typography. At the lower right, a smaller colour photo depicts a public execution scene, amplifying the film’s grim and confrontational tone. Japanese promotional text down the left-hand side emphasises the shock value and global notoriety of the film.
