“White Palace” (ぼくの美しい人だから), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1991 (film 1990), Susan Sarandon / James Spader, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O874
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the first Japanese cinema release of Luis Mandoki’s White Palace (ぼくの美しい人だから), starring Susan Sarandon and James Spader. The film was produced in 1990 and first opened theatrically in Japan on 20 December 1991, distributed domestically by Universal / UIP.
Based on Glenn Savan’s novel, the film follows Max Baron, a 27-year-old advertising executive still grieving the death of his wife, and Nora Baker, a 43-year-old working-class waitress whom he meets by chance. What begins as an unlikely physical relationship develops into a much deeper romance, forcing both characters to confront differences of age, class, lifestyle and social expectation. The film was directed by Luis Mandoki, with a screenplay by Alvin Sargent and Ted Tally, and also features Jason Alexander, Kathy Bates and Eileen Brennan.
Poster design
A beautifully restrained and atmospheric Japanese first-release design, dominated by a soft autumnal landscape of fallen red and orange leaves. At the centre, James Spader kneels to tie Susan Sarandon’s shoe, while Sarandon stands above him in a heavy coat, creating an intimate and unusually understated image that perfectly captures the film’s unconventional relationship.
The design makes extensive use of pale negative space and delicate pink, cream and lavender tones, giving the poster a gentle, romantic quality very different from conventional Hollywood campaign artwork. The Japanese title ぼくの美しい人だから runs vertically down the left side, accompanied by the names スーザン・サランドン / ジェームズ・スペイダー.
On the right, the key campaign copy reads:
「愛のかたちはさまざま・・・マックス27才、ノーラ43才。」
— “Love takes many forms… Max is 27, Nora is 43.”
The line puts the film’s age-gap romance directly at the centre of the Japanese campaign, while the overall composition remains elegant, intimate and exceptionally frameable.
It is over 34 years old!
