“Chinatown” (チャイナタウン), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1975, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) K243

Sale price $550.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster issued for the first Japanese theatrical release of Chinatown, released in Japan on 12 April 1975.

Film background
Roman Polanski’s sun-bleached neo-noir is a towering ‘70s American classic: private detective J.J. “Jake” Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is pulled into a web of corruption, land, and water politics in 1930s Los Angeles—spiralling toward one of cinema’s most famous final lines. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards (winning Best Original Screenplay for Robert Towne) and won four Golden Globes including Best Motion Picture (Drama).

Poster design
This Japanese key art is a masterclass in elegant menace: a luminous orange field, an iconic femme-fatale close-up wreathed in stylised cigarette smoke, and a shadowed trench-coat silhouette that cues the film’s fatalistic detective mood. The bold katakana title “チャイナタウン” in electric purple-pink lands like a neon sign—clean, graphic, and instantly recognisable on the wall.

Rarity and condition
First-release Japanese B2s for prestige American noirs of this calibre are increasingly hard to source in genuinely clean condition—making this example especially desirable. This one presents close to Near Mint overall, with vivid colour and excellent display impact.
