“Chinatown” (チャイナタウン), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1974 First Release, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O212
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1974 for the first domestic theatrical release of Chinatown (USA, 1974), directed by Roman Polanski and starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway, with John Huston. Japanese first-issue sheets for 1970s neo-noir classics are highly collectible.
Film background
Private eye J.J. “Jake” Gittes is hired to tail a philandering husband and stumbles into a labyrinth of Los Angeles water politics, land grabs, and family secrets. The film’s sun-bleached noir, Robert Towne’s Oscar-winning screenplay, and Jerry Goldsmith’s trumpet-laced score cemented it as a modern masterpiece.
Poster design
A sumptuous Japan-only layout that echoes the U.S. campaign: Dunaway’s ethereal profile unfurls into art-nouveau swirls across a pastel sky, while Nicholson and Dunaway appear in painted portrait at lower right. The bold magenta Japanese logotype 「チャイナタウン」 anchors the base with Golden Globe callout and credits—classic hallmarks of an authentic mid-’70s Toho/CIC release sheet with elegant wall presence.
