“Circus Boys” (二十世紀少年読本), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1989, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) I353
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the 1989 first Japanese release of Circus Boys, written and directed by Kaizō Hayashi and starring Hiroshi Mikami. Released in Japan by CBS/Sony Group, the film is a black-and-white drama about two brothers who grow up in a travelling circus and dream of performing on the trapeze.
When a leg injury ends his hopes of becoming an acrobat, Mikami’s character leaves the troupe and earns his living as a travelling hawker. His brother Wataru stays behind, trying to keep the circus going as its audiences dwindle. Their eventual reunion brings them back to the place where both imagined their futures.
The Japanese poster takes the form of a vintage circus bill. Against a vivid vermilion background, Mikami appears in a flat cap and herringbone coat, framed by an ivory crescent that echoes the troupe’s name, the Crescent Moon Circus. Around him, small monochrome portraits introduce the performers. The strongman holds a weight in each hand, but his English caption describes him as the “Owner of a tender heart.”
The Japanese title 「二十世紀少年読本」 spans a silver-grey arch beneath a striped canopy. Directly below, the poster identifies the film as an invited selection at both the 1989 Montreal International Film Festival and the 1989 Chicago International Film Festival.
Excellent condition overall, with light handling creases most visible on the reverse. The rich red background, fine captions and monochrome portraits remain clear and bright. Once framed, this poster will display excellently.
