“Crusher Joe” (クラッシャージョウ), Original First-Release Japanese Movie Poster 1983, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) S185

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the first Japanese cinema release of the landmark science-fiction anime Crusher Joe (クラッシャージョウ), released on 12 March 1983. Based on Haruka Takachiho’s celebrated science-fiction novels, the film marked the feature-film directorial debut of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, who also handled the screenplay, character design and animation direction. The production was created by Nippon Sunrise, with mechanical design by Shoji Kawamori and music by Norio Maeda. The original theatrical campaign credits Fuji Eiga as distributor.

Set in a far-future galaxy in which specialist troubleshooters known as “Crushers” undertake dangerous missions beyond the capabilities of conventional authorities, the film follows Joe, Alfin, Talos and Ricky aboard their spacecraft Minerva. After accepting what appears to be a straightforward transport assignment, the crew is drawn into a conspiracy involving space pirates, political intrigue and the lawless planet Lagol.

Poster design
A magnificent large-scale science-fiction composition dominated by the Minerva accelerating away from a futuristic planetary city, its four engines blazing brilliant yellow-white against the deep blue architecture below.

The perspective places the viewer directly behind the spacecraft, creating an extraordinary sensation of speed and scale. The immense city stretches towards a monumental illuminated tower at the centre of the horizon, while jagged mountain ranges frame the settlement on either side. Above everything hangs an enormous fiery orange planetary atmosphere, accompanied by smaller celestial bodies and a star-filled black sky.

Across the very top appears the film’s wonderfully concise campaign line:

「宇 宙 が 熱 い！」

— “The universe is hot!”

The unusual spacing between each character was a deliberate part of the film’s original advertising campaign, giving the phrase an immediately recognisable visual rhythm.

The lower section is anchored by the enormous red クラッシャージョウ title, accompanied by the compact English CRUSHER JOE emblem and the original production credits. The combination of orange planetary light, deep-space blacks, electric blues and glowing engines makes this one of the strongest purely mechanical / world-building designs associated with the film.

Unlike character-heavy anime posters, this sheet places the emphasis almost entirely on the Minerva and the scale of the Crusher Joe universe, making it especially appealing to collectors of vintage Japanese science-fiction, spacecraft and mechanical design.

Film significance
Crusher Joe arrived during an exceptional period for Japanese theatrical science fiction. Yasuhiko—already celebrated for his character work on Mobile Suit Gundam—made his directorial debut here, while Shoji Kawamori contributed the mechanical design. The film’s combination of detailed machinery, ambitious space-opera world building and exceptionally fluid theatrical animation helped establish it as one of the defining Japanese SF anime features of the early 1980s.

It is over 43 years old!

Excellent. The poster retains exceptionally strong colour and contrast, with the fiery orange sky, deep blacks, cool blue cityscape and brilliant engine glow remaining vivid and beautifully balanced.
