This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster issued by Toshiba-EMI in 1993 in connection with the Japanese soundtrack release of Destroy All Monsters (怪獣総進撃). The soundtrack formed part of Toshiba-EMI’s celebrated Godzilla Complete Works / ゴジラ大全集 series commemorating Godzilla’s approaching 40th anniversary, with Destroy All Monsters released as catalogue number TYCY-5353.
This is an original period Toshiba-EMI promotional poster from 1993, rather than the original 1968 theatrical issue. It adapts Toho’s spectacular first-release artwork while adding distinctive soundtrack-related design elements and Toshiba-EMI branding.
Film background
Originally released by Toho on 1 August 1968, Destroy All Monsters was the ninth entry in the Godzilla series. It was directed by Ishirō Honda, with special-effects direction by Sadamasa Arikawa, supervision by Eiji Tsuburaya, and an original score by legendary composer Akira Ifukube.
Set in the then-future year of 1999, the film imagines Earth’s monsters confined peacefully on Monsterland in the Ogasawara Islands. When the alien Kilaaks seize control of the island, the creatures are unleashed upon major cities around the world. Humanity eventually breaks the aliens’ control, leading to the celebrated climactic confrontation with King Ghidorah at Mount Fuji.
The film assembled an unprecedented company of eleven Toho monsters: Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Rodan, Mothra, Anguirus, Minilla, Gorosaurus, Kumonga, Baragon, Manda and Varan. This extraordinary ensemble established the film as one of the defining all-star spectacles of Showa-era kaiju cinema.
Soundtrack and poster design
Akira Ifukube’s commanding orchestral score is fundamental to the film’s identity, combining martial rhythms, ominous brass and monumental monster themes. The 1993 Toshiba-EMI release presented the film’s soundtrack as a dedicated album within the Godzilla Complete Works series.
The poster preserves the magnificent painted composition associated with the film’s original Japanese campaign. The Moonlight SY-3 spacecraft cuts across the star-filled upper register, while the enormous red title typography dominates the centre. Beneath it, Godzilla confronts King Ghidorah amid a dense gathering of Toho’s greatest monsters, each identified by an individual Japanese name label.
The original artwork is framed by red musical staves and notes, visually connecting the film’s kaiju spectacle with Ifukube’s celebrated score. The Toshiba-EMI and associated record-company marks printed along the lower edge identify this as the official soundtrack-related issue rather than an ordinary theatrical reprint. The resulting design occupies a fascinating position between Japanese movie-poster art, Godzilla history and collectible music advertising.
