“Diary of a Beginner” (Diary of a Beginner), Japanese B2 Poster for 7 Days in Havana Segment, 2012, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O547

Sale price $200.00

This is an original Japanese‑size B2 poster produced in 2012 to promote Diary of a Beginner, the Thursday segment of the anthology film 7 Days in Havana (2012). 7 Days in Havana is a Spanish‑language portmanteau feature built from seven vignettes, each directed by a different filmmaker and set on a different day of the week in contemporary Havana. Diary of a Beginner was written and directed by Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman, who also appears on screen.

Film background
Across 7 Days in Havana, directors including Benicio del Toro, Julio Medem, Gaspar Noé and Laurent Cantet offer very different perspectives on the Cuban capital, from nightclub culture to political rituals. Suleiman’s Diary of a Beginner is one of the film’s standout episodes: a near‑silent, gently comic riff in which the director wanders through Havana as an amused outsider, observing the city’s rhythms and oddities with his signature deadpan style. Critics have described it as a postcard‑like, Lost in Translation‑style reverie, and for many viewers it is the anthology’s highlight.

Poster design
The design is a striking piece of contemporary graphic art. Against a clean white border, a stylised woman’s profile is rendered in bold blocks of red and black, her hair transitioning into teal waves and abstract shapes that swirl across the sheet. A bright yellow sun anchors the upper right, echoing the tropical setting, while a sinuous red arm and hand stretch along the bottom. The title “DIARY OF A BEGINNER” sits in solid black type within the teal field, with the French subtitle “un film de ELIA SULEIMAN” beneath, giving the piece a festival‑poster feel. Minimal Japanese text keeps the emphasis on the artwork, making this an eye‑catching item for collectors of world cinema and modern poster design alike.
