“Die Hard” (ダイ・ハード), Original First-Release Japanese Movie Poster 1989, Rare B1 Size (72.8 × 103 cm) GA30
This is an original Japanese B1 theatrical poster produced for the first Japanese cinema release of John McTiernan’s landmark action film Die Hard (ダイ・ハード), starring Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman and Bonnie Bedelia. Produced in 1988, the film opened theatrically in Japan on 4 February 1989, distributed by 20th Century Fox.
Based on Roderick Thorp’s novel Nothing Lasts Forever, Die Hard follows New York police detective John McClane, who arrives in Los Angeles to visit his estranged wife at her company Christmas party, only to become trapped inside the skyscraper when Hans Gruber and his heavily armed group seize the building and take its occupants hostage. McClane’s isolated battle through the tower transformed Bruce Willis into an international film star and established one of the defining templates of modern action cinema. Alan Rickman made his feature-film debut as Gruber.
Poster design
A spectacular Japanese first-release design dominated by three essential images from the film: John McClane, the burning Nakatomi Plaza and the Los Angeles nightscape.
The enormous monochrome portrait of Bruce Willis as McClane fills virtually the entire right side of the sheet, his expression conveying the vulnerability and disbelief that distinguished the character from the seemingly indestructible action heroes of the period. At centre, the skyscraper rises vertically through the composition before its upper floors erupt into an immense orange-red fireball, with a helicopter silhouetted nearby against the black sky.
The huge headline across the top reads:
「地上40階！超高層ビルは戦場と化した！」
— “Forty floors above ground! The skyscraper has become a battlefield!”
The left-hand copy lays out the film’s irresistible premise: a Los Angeles high-rise has been seized, around thirty hostages are being held, and somewhere inside the building is a single off-duty New York detective. The campaign culminates in the wonderfully direct description of McClane:
「死んでも死なないタフな奴」
— approximately “The tough guy who just won’t die.”
Across the bottom, the enormous three-dimensional red ダイ・ハード title cuts dramatically through the black field, accompanied by the original English DIE HARD branding and first-release production credits.
The combination of black negative space, the blazing tower, enormous Bruce Willis portrait and vivid red Japanese typography makes this an exceptionally powerful piece of late-1980s Japanese action-film advertising.
Rare B1 format
This is the considerably larger Japanese B1 format, approximately 72.8 × 103 cm (28.7 × 40.6 inches)—roughly twice the surface area of the standard B2 theatrical poster. The enlarged format gives the McClane portrait and exploding skyscraper tremendous wall presence, making this a particularly desirable format for such an iconic 1980s title.
It is over 37 years old!
Condition
Excellent+ overall. The poster retains exceptionally strong colour and contrast, with the deep black field, fiery explosion, skyscraper detail and bright red title presenting superbly.
The verso remains generally very clean, with only light storage / handling character consistent with age. Once framed, this large B1 poster will display exceptionally well.
