“Doctor Dolittle” (ドリトル先生不思議な旅), Original Japanese Release Movie Poster 1967, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P299

Sale price $125.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1967 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Doctor Dolittle, the lavish 20th Century Fox musical starring Rex Harrison in the title role. A wonderful example of late-1960s roadshow-style poster design, it presents the film as a colourful family spectacle filled with music, fantasy, and animal charm.

Film background
Released in 1967, Doctor Dolittle was one of the major big-budget musical productions of its era. Starring Rex Harrison as the eccentric doctor who learns to speak with animals, the film combines fantasy adventure, comedy, and song in a large-scale family entertainment format typical of prestige studio musicals of the period. In Japan, the title was marketed as ドリトル先生不思議な旅, which translates roughly as “Doctor Dolittle’s Mysterious Journey”—a title that nicely captures the film’s whimsical, travel-and-adventure spirit.

Poster design
This Japanese poster uses a bright, collage-like design typical of late-1960s musical and family-roadshow advertising. At the centre is a large portrait of Rex Harrison in top hat and bow tie, immediately establishing the star power of the piece. Above him sits the wonderfully surreal image of a blue-and-yellow macaw perched on his hat, while around the sheet are playful vignettes of performers, elegant costumes, musical notes, fantasy scenes, and exotic animals, including a giraffe at lower right. The huge red Japanese title at the bottom gives the poster strong visual impact, and the overall effect is lively, charming, and highly displayable.
