This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed for 1982 theatrical re‑release of Walt Disney’s Dumbo (1941), featuring a newly recorded Japanese dub and carrying the coveted “文部省選定” (selected by the Ministry of Education) endorsement. Dumbo is Disney’s classic tale of a young circus elephant mocked for his oversized ears, who discovers he can use them to fly and become the star of the show. Made on a modest budget, the film became Disney’s most profitable feature of the 1940s and has remained a cornerstone of the studio’s animated canon. 

Film background
Set in a travelling circus, the story follows Jumbo Jr., nicknamed “Dumbo,” who suffers bullying and isolation until his only friend, Timothy Q. Mouse, helps him unlock his hidden talent: flight. The film’s emotional simplicity, memorable characters and musical set‑pieces (“Baby Mine,” “Pink Elephants on Parade”) have ensured its place as one of Disney’s most enduring family films, re‑released multiple times worldwide. 

Poster design
This bright, joyous B2 design is unique to Japan. A huge, airborne Dumbo dominates the composition, ears outstretched as he soars above a candy‑coloured circus. Timothy, dressed as a ringmaster, rides happily on his cap, while the crows and other supporting characters cheer from the background. A sweeping pink tagline arcs under Dumbo, promising to “take you to the land of fantasy,” and the title “ダンボ” fills a yellow oval in bold red and blue letters. At lower left, credits and the “新しい日本語版” notice highlight that this release offered a refreshed Japanese soundtrack, underscoring the poster’s historical place in the character’s long life in Japan.
