Sale price $120.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1982 for the first theatrical release of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Steven Spielberg’s landmark science-fiction fantasy and one of the most beloved films in cinema history. Released in Japan by Universal / CIC, the film stars Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore.

Original Japanese posters for E.T. are highly collectible, and this first-release B2 is especially desirable for its dramatic Japan-specific fantasy presentation, combining the famous finger-touch motif with a vast nocturnal sky and luminous spacecraft imagery.

Film background
Released in 1982, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial tells the story of Elliott, a lonely young boy who discovers and befriends a stranded alien left behind on Earth. As government agents close in, Elliott and his siblings attempt to help E.T. return home.

The film became a worldwide phenomenon and remains one of Spielberg’s defining achievements. Its emotional mixture of childhood wonder, friendship, loneliness, science fiction, and family drama made it one of the great popular films of the 1980s, and its imagery has become deeply embedded in modern film culture.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 is a superb and atmospheric release design. The upper section features the instantly recognisable image of E.T.’s glowing finger reaching toward the hand of Elliott, echoing the film’s themes of contact, trust, and emotional connection. Beneath it, the central title E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL sits against a dark sky, surrounded by glowing cloud forms and beams of light that suggest the arrival of something miraculous.

The lower half opens into a dramatic night landscape: radiant shafts of light descend from the clouds, while the tiny silhouettes of Elliott and E.T. appear at the bottom left, giving the composition a powerful sense of scale and wonder. The Japanese campaign copy at upper right reads:

「かつて子供だった大人へ。そしてこれから大人になる子供たちへ。スピルバーグが贈るSFファンタジー!」

roughly:

“To adults who were once children, and to children who will become adults. An SF fantasy from Spielberg!”

The result is a beautifully emotional Japanese design, presenting E.T. not simply as a science-fiction film, but as a universal story of childhood, memory, and imagination.
