“Europe ’51” (ヨーロッパ1951年), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1953, Ingrid Bergman / Roberto Rossellini, Very Rare, B2 Size (c. 51 × 73 cm) — T92
This is a very rare original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1953 first Japanese release of Europe ’51, originally titled Europa ’51. Released in Japan through Shochiku and Italifilm, this striking example is now over seventy years old and features an arresting portrait of Ingrid Bergman.
Directed by Roberto Rossellini, the 1952 Italian drama is an important work from his collaboration with Bergman. She plays Irene Girard, a wealthy woman living in Rome whose life changes profoundly following the death of her young son. Turning toward people living in poverty, she discovers a sense of purpose through compassion, bringing her into conflict with her family and the expectations of respectable society. Alexander Knox, Ettore Giannini and Giulietta Masina also appear.
The Japanese campaign places Bergman’s performance at its centre while drawing attention to Rossellini’s reputation. The left-hand credits reference Rome, Open City, Paisan and Germany, Year Zero, while the right-hand column advertises the film’s International Award at the 1952 Venice Film Festival.
A large, richly coloured portrait of Bergman looking back over her shoulder fills most of the sheet. Golden highlights illuminate her hair, while a deep red collar rises around her face. Her searching expression gives the composition its emotional focus, balancing the glamour of a star portrait with the uncertainty and isolation central to the story.
Broad blue-grey window bars frame the portrait, with a vertical bar near the right edge and a horizontal crosspiece beneath her face. These strong geometric elements suggest confinement without obscuring her expression. Dark green shadows and the warm cream background heighten the contrast with her red clothing.
The enormous Japanese title, 「ヨーロッパ1951年」, occupies the lower section in vivid red lettering. The original title, EUROPA ’51, appears in dark green at the lower left, above the joint Shochiku–Italifilm distribution credit.
The red promotional headline reads:
「世界の女性に贈る!大いなる愛情と真実の傑作!」
“Dedicated to the women of the world! A masterpiece of profound love and truth!”
This is a compelling example for collectors of Ingrid Bergman, Roberto Rossellini, Italian cinema and Japanese poster design of the 1950s. Its concentrated portraiture and bold colour give it considerable display presence.
