“The Preacher’s Wife” (天使の贈りもの), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1996, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) — T169

This is an original Japanese B2 poster produced for the 1996 theatrical release of The Preacher’s Wife, Penny Marshall’s warm-hearted romantic fantasy starring Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston and Courtney B. Vance. Combining gentle comedy, Christmas atmosphere and Houston’s gospel performances, the film celebrates love, faith and community.

Film background
A reimagining of the 1947 classic The Bishop’s Wife, the story follows a struggling minister whose prayers for help bring an unexpected visitor: Dudley, an angel played by Denzel Washington. His arrival complicates matters when he becomes drawn to the minister’s neglected wife, Julia, played by Whitney Houston.

Houston’s voice is central to the film’s appeal, with musical performances that complement its affectionate portrait of family and church life. Washington brings charm and humour to the supernatural visitor whose efforts to help do not always go as planned.

Poster design
A radiant portrait of Whitney Houston fills the upper half, her smiling face surrounded by softly glowing clouds and star-like highlights. Below, Washington stands holding an open book, framed by a playful pair of blue outline angel wings.

The delicate cream, peach and gold palette gives the design a gentle, dreamlike atmosphere. The Japanese title 「天使の贈りもの」 appears in deep rose lettering near the bottom, with a small tilted halo above the first character and the English title underneath. An especially appealing design for collectors of Whitney Houston, Denzel Washington and 1990s romantic cinema.
