“Father of the Bride” / 「花嫁の父」, Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1968, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) B279
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the 1968 Japanese re-release of Father of the Bride / 「花嫁の父」, Vincente Minnelli’s classic 1950 Hollywood comedy-drama starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor.
Film background
Stanley T. Banks is a successful lawyer and devoted family man whose comfortable life is disrupted when his beloved daughter, Kay, announces that she intends to marry.
Stanley initially struggles to accept the news, but his concerns soon expand into the escalating expense, social complications, and general chaos of organising a large wedding. Beneath the comedy is a tender portrait of a father confronting the reality that his daughter is growing up and beginning a life of her own.
Directed by Vincente Minnelli, the screenplay was written by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, based on the novel by Edward Streeter. The score was composed by Adolph Deutsch.
The film stars Spencer Tracy, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Bennett, and Don Taylor.
Father of the Bride was a major critical and commercial success, receiving three Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Spencer Tracy. It remains one of the defining Hollywood family comedies of its era, admired for its warmth, humour, and sensitive portrayal of the relationship between a father and daughter.
Poster design
The poster uses an elegant and romantic composition built around a soft pink, cream, blue, and green palette.
The upper section is dominated by a large portrait of Elizabeth Taylor as Kay Banks, wearing a white bridal veil and pearl earrings. Her luminous face is set against a rich pink background, immediately establishing the film’s wedding theme and giving the poster a refined, glamorous presence.
At lower right, Spencer Tracy appears in formal morning dress, proudly escorting his daughter in her wedding gown. This full-length image captures the emotional heart of the story: the moment when a father must finally let his daughter go.
A smaller vignette at lower left shows members of the Banks family gathered together examining wedding gifts, reinforcing the film’s combination of domestic comedy and affectionate family drama.
The vertical text at upper right reads:
「父との限りない愛の思い出を胸に秘め…
永遠の幸せがウェディング・ドレスに溢れる
嫁ぎゆくその日…」
“Holding memories of her father’s limitless love within her heart… the day she marries, eternal happiness overflowing from her wedding dress…”
The vertical text at upper left reads:
「父と娘の哀歓を暖かいタッチで謳い
若いあなたに贈る愛と感動の花束」
“A warm portrayal of the joys and sorrows shared by a father and daughter—a bouquet of love and emotion offered to the young.”
The original English title:
“Father of the Bride”
appears across the centre in flowing blue script, decorated with delicate floral illustrations.
Directly beneath it, the Japanese title:
「花嫁の父」
is rendered in large, elegant green brush-style characters.
The principal cast and production credits run along the bottom edge, together with the Nippon Herald Films distribution mark.
