“Final Yamato” (宇宙戦艦ヤマト 完結編), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1983, Horizontal B2 Size (73 × 51 cm) N78A

Sale price $110.00

This is an original Japanese horizontal B2 poster printed in 1983 for the first theatrical release of Final Yamato (宇宙戦艦ヤマト 完結編 / Uchū Senkan Yamato Kanketsu-hen), the epic concluding chapter of the original Space Battleship Yamato saga. Known internationally through the wider franchise as Star Blazers, Yamato is one of the defining works of Japanese animated science fiction, and this poster captures the series at its most operatic and visually ambitious.

Film background
Released in 1983, Final Yamato was conceived as the grand finale to the original Yamato cycle, bringing the long-running space-opera narrative to an emotional and spectacular conclusion. The film follows the crew of the Yamato as they confront a cosmic-scale crisis involving the wandering water planet Aquarius, the threat to Earth, and the militaristic forces of Dinguil.

The film is remembered for its immense scale, dramatic orchestral scoring, tragic tone, and unusually long theatrical presentation. Its extended 70mm version became famous among animation historians for its extraordinary running time and remained one of the longest animated theatrical features for decades.

As part of the original Yamato phenomenon, Final Yamato belongs to a crucial period in Japanese animation history, when theatrical anime increasingly embraced large-scale world-building, science-fiction spectacle, and emotionally mature storytelling.

Poster design
This is a superb and dramatic horizontal Japanese release design, dominated by a vast cosmic cityscape glowing against the darkness of space. At left, a colossal illuminated fortress-like metropolis rises beneath a huge planet, its towers and structures lit in fiery orange and red. Searchlights and beams cut across the sky, while a volcano-like form and distant fleets create a sense of planetary catastrophe and military scale.

At upper right, the Yamato itself appears in flight, small against the enormous celestial backdrop, reinforcing the film’s sense of overwhelming cosmic danger. The composition is unusually cinematic, with the wide format giving the image the feeling of a space-opera panorama.

At lower right, the title appears in bold white Japanese text:

宇宙戦艦ヤマト 完結編
“Space Battleship Yamato: Final Chapter”

The minimal title placement allows the artwork to dominate almost the entire sheet, making this a particularly strong display piece for collectors of Yamato, vintage anime, and early-1980s Japanese science-fiction poster design.
