“Animage No. 3 / Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato” / 「アニメージュ 第3号/さらば宇宙戦艦ヤマト」, Original Japanese Nakazuri Advertising Poster 1978, Rare, B3 Size (36.4 × 51.5 cm) F291

Sale price $225.00

This is an original Japanese B3 nakazuri advertising poster printed in 1978 to promote Animage magazine Issue No. 3, the September 1978 issue, alongside Tokuma Shoten’s special extra publication devoted to Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato: Warriors of Love / 「さらば宇宙戦艦ヤマト 愛の戦士たち」.

Designed to be suspended from the ceilings of Japanese commuter trains, the poster captures a formative moment in anime publishing, when Animage was establishing a new kind of magazine devoted to animation, its creators, characters, and expanding fan culture.

Publication and anime background

Published by Tokuma Shoten, Animage Issue No. 3 featured a broad selection of major anime productions from the period, including One-Million-Year Trip: Bander Book, Galaxy Express 999, Aim for the Ace!, Puss in Boots, Star of the Giants, and Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato.

The accompanying special publication celebrated Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato: Warriors of Love, the enormously successful theatrical continuation of the Space Battleship Yamato saga. The film was directed by Toshio Masuda and Leiji Matsumoto and created by Yoshinobu Nishizaki.

The central artwork, however, features Kazuya Ryuzaki and Erika from the romantic super-robot series Tōshō Daimos / 「闘将ダイモス」. The series was directed by Tadao Nagahama, with character designs by Yuki Hijiri.

Poster design

The poster uses a dramatic, romantic illustration of Kazuya and Erika embracing beneath a concentrated spotlight. They are positioned against a dark nighttime landscape, while Erika’s long black hair flows forcefully across the composition toward the left, giving the otherwise intimate image a strong sense of movement.

The bright yellow text at upper left reads:

「話題騒然!感動と興奮の第3号!絶賛発売中!」

“A massive sensation! The moving and thrilling third issue! Now on sale to rave reviews!”

Printed in white beneath it is a list of the anime productions featured in the issue: One-Million-Year Trip: Bander Book, Galaxy Express 999, Aim for the Ace!, Puss in Boots, Star of the Giants, and Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato.

The red lower section proclaims:

「愛と感動の最新アルバム!さらば宇宙戦艦ヤマト」

“The latest album of love and emotion! Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato.”

The upper-left corner is dominated by the instantly recognizable yellow Animage / 「アニメージュ」 logo block. At lower right, the composition is anchored by the large white brush-script title 「ヤマト」, accompanied by 「愛の戦士たち」 and the publication date:

「8月15日発売!」
“On sale August 15!”

The Tokuma Shoten / 「徳間書店」 name appears at the bottom right.
