“Fist of Fury” (ドラゴン怒りの鉄拳), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1974, Bruce Lee, Photographic Design, B2 Format (c. 51 × 73 cm) — U37

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the first Japanese release of Fist of Fury in 1974, originally titled 精武門. First released in Hong Kong in 1972, the film opened in Japan through Towa on 20 July 1974. This striking photographic design fills almost the entire sheet with a single combat image, placing Bruce Lee’s physical presence at the centre of the advertising.

Directed by Lo Wei and produced by Raymond Chow for Golden Harvest, the film stars Bruce Lee, supported by Nora Miao, Chikara Hashimoto, Tien Feng and Robert Baker. Set in early twentieth-century Shanghai, it follows Chen Zhen, a martial arts student investigating his teacher’s death. Discovering that his master was poisoned, Chen confronts a rival Japanese dojo in a story combining revenge, loyalty and resistance to humiliation.

The Japanese release formed part of the intense enthusiasm surrounding Lee’s films during the 1970s. Promoted in the wider campaign as “Bruce Lee’s third release,” it arrived on the first anniversary of his death. That context gives this original Japanese advertising a connection to the period when his screen image was becoming firmly established among Japanese audiences.

Printed on one B2 sheet, the composition captures a shirtless Lee in close combat with an opponent wearing a white martial arts uniform. Lee’s outstretched arm crosses the photograph horizontally, while his open-mouthed expression and the tightly cropped figures convey the intensity of the encounter. Warm skin tones and the interior’s brown and ochre colours contrast with the white uniform and Lee’s black trousers.

The typography is concentrated near the bottom, allowing the photograph to dominate. “FIST OF FURY” appears in compact, stacked white lettering beside “BRUCE LEE IN” and the English production credits. The blue Towa diamond, Golden Harvest emblem and wording “TOWA presents a Golden Harvest production” accompany the smaller Japanese title. A printed Eirin mark is visible at the lower-left corner.

The restrained lettering and forceful photographic composition make this an especially appealing example for collectors of Bruce Lee, Golden Harvest, Hong Kong martial arts cinema and original Japanese release posters.
