This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 2007 for the first Japanese release of Koji Yamamura’s animated adaptation of Franz Kafka’s short story Ein Landarzt (A Country Doctor). Produced by Yamamura Animation and released domestically with Shochiku credits, the film became an internationally acclaimed festival favorite for its surreal, hand-drawn style and faithful Kafkaesque mood.
Poster design
An unsettling, oversized caricature of the country doctor looms across a rippling, graphite-textured landscape, his small figure dangling beneath an enormous head—perfectly channeling Kafka’s anxiety and absurdity. Handwritten “Franz Kafka” skims the center, while the bold serif title “Ein Landarzt” and the Japanese title 「カフカ 田舎医者」 anchor the lower field. The limited gray/sepia palette, jittery linework, and calligraphic marks give the sheet a haunting, museum-print quality.
