We are thrilled to offer one of the most exciting Japanese billboard posters we’ve encountered. This is a King Size Japanese Premiere Billboard Poster for G.I. Samurai (Sengoku Jieitai) (1979) — a colossal survivor from an era when movie advertising in Japan aimed to be as bold and unforgettable as the films themselves.

This massive format, measuring approximately 120 x 180 cm, was used for display in major public areas with lots of footfall in Japan. Posters of this size were extremely limited in number and rarely saved, especially given their impracticality for collectors in space‑conscious Japan. Most were discarded after use, and those that do survive almost never appear on the market.

A landmark time‑slip action epic directed by Kōsei Saitō and starring Sonny Chiba (Shinichi Chiba), Sengoku Jieitai follows a JSDF unit hurled back to Japan’s Warring States period, where modern firepower collides with samurai warfare. The film has long enjoyed cult status for its audacious concept and large‑scale set‑pieces.

Design‑wise, this billboard is a showstopper: samurai cavalry thunder through a riverbed as a modern JSDF tank and helicopter charge behind them, encapsulating the movie’s past‑meets‑present premise in a single kinetic image. The huge red title 戦国自衛隊 dominates the lower half, paired with the white tagline: 「歴史は俺たちに なにをさせようとしているのか?」(“What is history trying to make us do?”). It’s an image of pure alternate‑history adrenaline.

This poster is in excellent condition for its type and size. It is folded as originally issued, with some paper loss at one fold and light fold wear/handling typical of premiere billboards. Once framed or linen‑backed, it will present excellently on the wall. Please review the images—this is the exact poster for sale.
