“Godzilla: Final Wars” (ゴジラ ファイナルウォーズ), Very Rare Original Japanese Promotional Poster 2004, Noriyoshi Ohrai Artwork / FamilyMart Campaign, A1 Size (84 × 59.4 cm) JA39
This is an original Japanese A1 promotional poster produced for the 2004 FamilyMart “Godzilla Final Chance Campaign – Part 2”, promoting Godzilla: Final Wars. Featuring spectacular artwork by Noriyoshi Ohrai, this very rare landscape poster combines Godzilla’s 50th anniversary, Japanese convenience-store advertising, and classic kaiju illustration.
Film background
Released in Japan on 4 December 2004, Godzilla: Final Wars was directed by Ryuhei Kitamura, with a cast including Masahiro Matsuoka, Rei Kikukawa, and Don Frye. Its international monster battles and alien-invasion storyline brought together an extensive roster of Toho creatures for an ambitious anniversary production.
The poster preserves the promotional build-up to that release, with the film’s metallic gold logo and “2004.12.4” opening date prominently displayed beneath the campaign information.
Poster design
The right side is dominated by Noriyoshi Ohrai’s towering Godzilla, roaring above burning buildings and damaged electricity pylons. Rich browns and blacks give the creature weight, while brilliant orange and yellow light illuminates its head, raised claws, and heavily textured body.
The National Diet Building, tangled power lines, flames, and approaching aircraft establish a dramatic sense of scale. Flashes of blue-white light punctuate the fiery palette, while a small 1954–2004 anniversary emblem connects the composition to fifty years of Godzilla.
On the left, a vivid red field carries the bold blue-and-white campaign heading and the clearly printed dates 2–15 November 2004. The accompanying slogan encourages customers to purchase qualifying products and “get your hands on Godzilla’s history.”
A detailed product panel features familiar Japanese brands including Xylitol, Recaldent, Xylish, and POs-CaM, alongside advance cinema tickets. The “11/8 is Good Teeth Day” message explains the promotion’s dental-care theme, preserving an unusually specific slice of Japanese retail advertising.
About Japanese promotional posters
Japanese retail promotional posters advertised product campaigns, competitions, and entertainment releases within shops. This example was produced for a two-week FamilyMart campaign, bringing Godzilla imagery directly into an everyday shopping environment.
Measuring approximately 84 × 59.4 cm, its A1 landscape format provides a larger display area than a standard Japanese B2 poster. The broad composition gives both Ohrai’s illustration and the detailed campaign graphics considerable presence.
Rarity and significance
The artwork has a particularly interesting history. Ohrai’s 2004 painting, Godzilla no Genfūkei (ゴジラの原風景), was created for the “G: Origins and Evolution” exhibition at Kobe Fashion Museum. Portions subsequently appeared in Godzilla: Final Wars publicity and the FamilyMart campaign, connecting this retail poster to the wider anniversary celebrations.
This very rare promotional example has particular appeal for collectors of Noriyoshi Ohrai, Godzilla, Toho memorabilia, and Japanese advertising. Its combination of substantial A1 dimensions, powerful painted artwork, and dated campaign information makes it a distinctive addition to a specialist collection.
