“Halloween” (ハロウィン), Original Japanese First Release Movie Poster 1978, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA733
This is an original Japanese B2 poster issued in Japan for the original release era of Halloween (1978), John Carpenter’s era-defining slasher masterpiece—starring Jamie Lee Curtis in her iconic breakout role as Laurie Strode, alongside Donald Pleasence as Dr. Loomis. A landmark in modern horror cinema, Halloween established the template for the American slasher film—cold, minimal, and terrifyingly effective—becoming one of the most influential genre films of all time.
Poster design
An exceptionally atmospheric Japanese design that leans into pure dread rather than narrative montage. Against a vast field of near-black night, Michael Myers emerges in ghostly blue light—mask expressionless, eyes dead—raising a long knife that catches the light as blood droplets arc through the darkness. Below, a screaming victim’s face collapses into shadow, while a small, isolated suburban house sits on the horizon line—tiny and helpless—creating that quintessential Halloween tension: ordinary neighbourhoods, unspeakable violence. The typography is beautifully restrained: the vertical Japanese title 「ハロウィン」 runs down the left margin like a cold label on a case file, while the chilling Japanese warning copy at right reads: 「奇妙な息づかいが聞こえたら、決して振り返らないで!」 (“If you hear strange breathing, never turn around!”). A masterclass in minimalist horror marketing, and a superb display piece for serious genre collectors.
