“Help!” (HELP! 四人はアイドル), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1965, The Beatles, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) S52
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical release poster, printed for the 1965 first Japanese cinema release of Richard Lester’s Help! (HELP! 四人はアイドル), starring John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Distributed in Japan by United Artists, it was The Beatles’ second feature film following A Hard Day’s Night, expanding Lester’s freewheeling style into a full-colour, globe-trotting musical adventure.
The story begins when Ringo finds himself unable to remove a ring coveted by a cult, sending the four Beatles into an increasingly surreal chase through London, the Austrian Alps and the Bahamas. Along the way, the film incorporates a remarkable group of Lennon–McCartney and George Harrison songs including “Help!,” “Ticket to Ride,” “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away,” “I Need You,” “Another Girl,” “The Night Before” and “You’re Going to Lose That Girl.”
Poster design
A fantastic and unmistakably mid-1960s Japanese design built around large individual portraits of all four Beatles, playful action imagery and enormous Pop Art typography.
At the top, Paul McCartney dominates the right side in profile, while the four Beatles are shown skiing across the snow at left—one of the film’s most memorable Alpine sequences. Beneath this, George Harrison appears in a large frontal portrait, balanced by a small vignette of the cult imagery from the film.
The centre of the sheet is almost completely occupied by the enormous:
HELP!
rendered in spectacular blocks of red, pink and magenta, with the small English line:
“The Colorful Adventures of THE BEATLES are more Colorful than ever… in COLOR!”
integrated into the typography.
Below, the Japanese title:

appears prominently alongside the credit:

— “Directed by Richard Lester.”
The lower section completes the quartet with a smiling Ringo Starr and an exuberant close-up of John Lennon, while another tiny image of the Beatles running through the snow reinforces the film’s frenetic comic energy.
The blue Japanese copy also promotes the movie as the second film from the world’s idols, The Beatles, while the song list printed at lower left advertises the extraordinary soundtrack directly on the poster.
The combination of Beatles portraiture, skiing imagery, oversized HELP! lettering, pastel blue dividers and period Japanese typography makes this a superb piece of original 1960s music and cinema ephemera.
Film significance
Help! represents The Beatles at the absolute height of Beatlemania, but also at a fascinating point in their visual evolution. Richard Lester’s jump cuts, absurd humour, rapid montage and unconventional musical sequences had a major influence on the language of later music television and promotional filmmaking.
The movie also preserves the group performing material from one of their most important transitional periods, immediately before their music moved decisively away from straightforward early pop into the increasingly ambitious studio experimentation of the later 1960s.
Original 1965 Japanese theatrical material featuring all four Beatles is now particularly desirable, combining music history with the distinctive graphic language of vintage Japanese cinema advertising.

Condition
Good+ / Very Good. This is a genuine, used theatrical survivor with considerable age and display history, and we have fully taken the condition into account when pricing.
The poster has general creasing and handling wear, together with edge wear and small losses, particularly along the left margin and corners. There are several pinholes / small punctures, including one within the printed image area, as clearly shown in the detailed photographs.
There is also a longer tear / split in the lower section which has been repaired from the reverse with archival tape. The paper shows age toning and general surface character consistent with an original theatrical poster from 1965.
Importantly, the principal Beatles portraits, huge HELP! typography and overall colour remain strong, and the poster retains tremendous period character.
Once framed, it will display very well.
