This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1998 first Japanese release of Deconstructing Harry, written and directed by Woody Allen, with distinctive illustration by Floc’h.
Originally produced in 1997, the film opened in Japan on 31 October 1998 through Shochiku-Fuji. Its Japanese title, 地球は女で回ってる, loosely translates as “The World Revolves Around Women”, placing Harry’s complicated relationships at the centre of the campaign.
Allen plays Harry Block, a successful novelist whose habit of turning private relationships into fiction has alienated the people around him. Facing writer’s block and a succession of personal crises, he finds memories, fantasies and characters from his own stories intruding upon reality. The ensemble includes Billy Crystal, Judy Davis, Demi Moore, Elisabeth Shue and Robin Williams, all prominently billed on the poster.
The illustration is credited along the lower-left margin to Floc’h, the French artist Jean-Claude Floch. His clean outlines, flat colours and carefully controlled expressions give the design the character of a European comic illustration.
Across the upper portion, four female figures are repeated in a mirrored arrangement, forming a colourful, almost symmetrical procession. Folded arms, sideways glances and contrasting poses convey a range of attitudes, while pink, red, pale blue and black clothing stands out against the light background.
Below them, the enormous black Japanese title spans the width of the sheet. A grey banner immediately above reads:
「小説家」と「女たち」
“The Novelist and the Women.”
The lower half isolates a small caricature of Woody Allen in a bright red sweater, shoulders slumped and hands in his pockets. A tangled black scribble hangs above his head, neatly expressing his character’s confusion and frustration. The surrounding empty space makes his solitary figure particularly effective.
Beside him, a speech bubble reads:
「毎日誰かを愛したい…」
“I want to love someone every day…”
The combination of expressive illustration, bold Japanese lettering and generous space gives this poster a witty, highly displayable appeal. It is especially attractive for collectors of Floc’h, European illustration, Woody Allen films and distinctive Japanese movie-poster design.
