House (1977) — Original Japanese "King Size" Billboard Poster

This is an original, ultra‑rare Japanese King Size billboard poster for the first Japanese theatrical release of House (ハウス), Nobuhiko Obayashi’s delirious debut feature for Toho. Produced for the film’s initial run, this billboard was printed as a single sheet and issued for large‑format display—exactly as used at cinemas.

Printed in an enormous King Size (120 × 180 cm), this is one of the most coveted display sizes among collectors. The scale and presence of this poster are breathtaking on the wall.

Exceptionally rare: Large‑format House billboards almost never surface, especially in complete, presentable condition. A true top‑tier piece for Japanese cult‑cinema collectors.

About the film / cultural significance
Obayashi—already famous for avant‑garde shorts and wildly inventive TV commercials—exploded onto the big screen with House, a pop‑art ghost story built around seven schoolgirls (Gorgeous, Fantasy, Prof, Melody, Kung Fu, Sweet, Mac), matte‑painted sets, handmade effects, and a rock score by Godiego. Derided and adored in equal measure on release, the film has since become a global cult classic for its anarchic visual language and its singular blend of horror, comedy, and music.
Japanese poster culture note: while the B2 “cat head” design is well known, this billboard montage style—a collage of production stills with the colossal green 「ハウス」 title and English HOUSE crawl—was created for high‑visibility exterior display during the 1977 release and is dramatically rarer.

Design & credits (as printed on this exact example)

  • Bold red field with multi‑panel stills; giant green 「ハウス」 title over the English HOUSE.

  • Lower credits panel features the 1977 cast row and staff blocks; side taglines across the top.

  • Border marks include “Printed in Japan © TOHO Co., Ltd. 1977” and the 映倫 (Eirin) code 77505.

  • Music plug for Godiego on the credit band—reflecting the Columbia soundtrack tie‑in.

  • Reverse shows original theatre‑file handwritten title「ハウス」.

Excellent Condition (as found, unrestored): single‑sheet large billboard paper with original factory folds.
