“Howl’s Moving Castle” (ハウルの動く城), Original Japanese Movie Poster 2004, Toho First Release, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) E198
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 2004 for the first domestic theatrical release of Howl’s Moving Castle (ハウルの動く城), directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli, released in Japan by Toho. First-issue Japanese posters for major Ghibli features are highly collectible.
Film background
Adapted from Diana Wynne Jones’s novel, the film follows Sophie—cursed into an old woman by the Witch of the Waste—who finds refuge with the sorcerer Howl, his fire-demon Calcifer, and a ragtag family inside a wandering mechanical castle. A meditation on love, selfhood, and the costs of war, it became one of Ghibli’s biggest box-office successes and an international award winner.
Poster design
A luminous country sheet: aged Sophie climbs a sunlit hill path with Heen at her heels as Turnip Head and Howl’s castle puff smoke across the distant ridge. Miyazaki’s hand-painted meadow glows in yellows and greens, while the bold scarlet brush title 「ハウルの動く城」 anchors the base beside the English subtitle. The Studio Ghibli/Totoro mark and Toho crediting appear along the footer—classic hallmarks of a first-release sheet with superb wall presence.
