“Howl’s Moving Castle” (ハウルの動く城), Original Japanese Promotional Poster 2005 (DVD & Video Release), B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O712
This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster issued in Japan to advertise the DVD & video release of Hayao Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle (ハウルの動く城). Rather than a theatrical one-sheet, this is a home-entertainment campaign poster, produced for in-store display and retail promotion—highly collectible due to its bold, graphic layout and the spectacular full-frame illustration of the walking castle.
Howl’s Moving Castle is one of Studio Ghibli’s most beloved modern-era films: a sweeping anti-war fantasy set in a magical kingdom on the brink of conflict, following Sophie—a young hat-maker cursed into an old woman—who finds refuge in the wizard Howl’s ramshackle mechanical castle. Visually rich and emotionally resonant, it remains a standout in Miyazaki’s late career for its world-building, character design, and painterly backgrounds.
Poster design
This is an all-impact composition dominated by the castle itself: a towering, smoke-belching mechanical organism rendered in dense, textured detail—pipes, rivets, vents, and improvised architecture stacked into a living machine. The film title ハウルの動く城 appears in bold red across the lower half, while the large release callout “11.16 DVD & ビデオリリース” anchors the bottom band, accompanied by a small product image—making this a perfect period piece of mid-2000s Japanese retail promotion. It’s an incredibly displayable poster: dramatic lighting, huge scale, and one of the most iconic “castle” visuals associated with the film.
