“Innerspace” (インナースペース), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1987, John Alvin Artwork, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA1232
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the first Japanese release of Joe Dante’s Innerspace, starring Dennis Quaid, Martin Short and Meg Ryan. Featuring artwork by John Alvin, this striking design translates the film’s miniature adventure into a memorable visual illusion.
The film opened in Japan through Warner Bros. on 5 December 1987. The prominent “1988 New Year” wording refers to its holiday-season campaign.
Film background
Dennis Quaid plays a test pilot who volunteers for a miniaturisation experiment, only to find himself accidentally injected into the body of an anxious supermarket clerk, played by Martin Short. Pursued by criminals seeking the technology, the unlikely pair must cooperate to survive.
With Steven Spielberg as executive producer, a score by Jerry Goldsmith, and Academy Award-winning visual effects, the film combines science-fiction spectacle with Joe Dante’s mischievous humour.
Poster design
Alvin’s illustration places a tiny pilot and his exploration pod between an enormous thumb and forefinger. The oversized hand fills almost the entire composition, making the miniature figures appear extraordinarily vulnerable. A brilliant blue-white glow illuminates the narrow gap, drawing attention directly to the film’s central premise.
Warm peach and reddish skin tones contrast with deep blue-black shadows, while a fine electric-blue outline gives the fingers an almost otherworldly appearance. The dramatic change in scale creates a sense of wonder through one simple, carefully composed image.
The Japanese campaign adds a massive orange title across the lower portion and bold white lettering above: “This time, the adventure is inside the body!” Spielberg’s presentation credit, Joe Dante’s director credit, and the Amblin and Warner Bros. logos complete the design.
Condition
Excellent overall, with small pinholes, minor edge wear and light surface handling marks. The illustration retains rich colour and strong visual impact. Once framed, this poster will display very well.
