"It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (おかしなおかしなおかしな世界)", Original Japanese Re-Release STB Tatekan Poster 1971 (for 1963 film), STB Size (c.51 × 145 cm) O266
This is an original Japanese STB tatekan poster printed in 1971 for the domestic re-release of Stanley Kramer’s all-star chase epic It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963). Issued in the tall, street-side STB (散貼/立看) format used on outdoor signboards, these were printed in far smaller numbers than B2s and were typically discarded after use—making survivors especially scarce and sought after.
Film background
Kramer marshalled one of cinema’s greatest ensemble casts—Spencer Tracy, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Mickey Rooney, Buddy Hackett, Ethel Merman, Jonathan Winters, Phil Silvers, Terry-Thomas, and many more—into a breakneck treasure hunt that redefined large-scale screen comedy. Shot in Ultra Panavision/Cinerama venues with spectacular stunts, the film set the template for later ensemble capers and road comedies. Music by Ernest Gold; cinematography by Ernest Laszlo.
Poster design
A superb, kinetic tatekan composition that makes full use of the vertical canvas: a screaming-tire close-up and careening stunt car plunge from the top into a diagonal torrent of mayhem—billboards, planes, spin-outs and dangling daredevils—spiralling down toward the suited mystery man clutching a briefcase. The towering, scarlet, stacked Japanese title 「おかしなおかしなおかしな世界」 slants through the center, with the English logo “IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD” and the United Artists credit strip along the base. Side copy teases the “explosive” speed and scale of the pursuit; the 映倫 seal confirms domestic release.
