This is an original Japanese poster issued as the second supplement to the August 1989 edition of Animage magazine, celebrating Hayao Miyazaki’s Kiki’s Delivery Service. Published by Tokuma Shoten during the film’s original Japanese release year, it features a sweeping aerial illustration of Kiki and Jiji flying above the coastal city of Koriko.
Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, based on the novel by Eiko Kadono, the Studio Ghibli film follows a young witch who leaves home to begin an independent life. Accompanied by her black cat, Jiji, Kiki establishes a delivery service using her broomstick. Its story of friendship, self-doubt and renewed confidence remains central to the film’s enduring appeal.
The artwork places Kiki, wearing her distinctive red bow and dark dress, among a flock of seagulls high above the city. Jiji balances on her orange bag, while a small red radio hangs beneath her broom. The surrounding birds introduce movement and depth, bringing the viewer into the scene alongside them.
Below stretches an intricately illustrated landscape of red rooftops, tree-lined streets, bridges, harbours and blue coastal waters. Green fields and wooded hills extend into the distance, giving the composition an expansive sense of freedom and discovery.
The pink Japanese title 「魔女の宅急便」 sits discreetly in the upper-right corner, allowing the illustration to dominate. Directly beneath it, the publication imprint identifies the poster’s 1989 Animage magazine origin.
The familiar white tagline runs vertically through the lower-left section:
