"Kwaidan" (怪談), Original First-Release Japanese Horizontal STB Poster 1964, Ultra Rare, Size (145 x 51cm) M158

Sale price $750.00

This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1964 for the very first domestic release of Kwaidan, Masaki Kobayashi’s haunting, Academy-Award-nominated anthology of traditional ghost stories.

Why this piece is special

  • Ultra-rare horizontal STB format – Measuring roughly 145 × 51 cm, this “wide tatekan” was produced in tiny numbers for marquee display only. In more than a decade of collecting, this is the first copy we have encountered.

  • Dramatic brush-stroke design – The title 怪談 (“Ghost Stories”) explodes across a blood-red sumi-ink wash, flanked by monochrome portrait vignettes of the film’s large ensemble cast.

  • Country-of-origin collectible – © TOHO Co., Ltd. 1964 credit appears lower left; this sheet was printed for the initial road-show engagement that introduced Kobayashi’s four macabre tales (Black Hair, The Woman of the Snow, Hoichi the Earless, and In a Cup of Tea) to Japanese audiences in full “総天然色” (Total Natural Color).

It is over 60 years old!
