“Lady Snowblood: Love Song of Vengeance” (修羅雪姫 怨み恋歌), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1974, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA95
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1974 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Lady Snowblood: Love Song of Vengeance (修羅雪姫 怨み恋歌), the second Lady Snowblood film starring Meiko Kaji and directed by Toshiya Fujita, released by Toho.
Film background
Set in the turbulent early 20th century, the sequel finds Yuki (Lady Snowblood) on the run after avenging her family. Captured by the authorities, she is offered a reprieve from execution if she agrees to infiltrate and eliminate a group of anarchists. Instead, Yuki becomes entangled in political intrigue and begins to question her role as a tool of vengeance. Mixing chambara action with social commentary, Love Song of Vengeance expands the scope of the original and further cements the character’s influence on later works such as Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill.
Poster design
The B2 artwork foregrounds Meiko Kaji’s iconic presence. She stands in a striped kimono, sword drawn in a sweeping motion, her expression a mix of sorrow and steely resolve. A curved red brushstroke arcs beside her, leading the eye to the purple calligraphic title 「怨み恋歌」 on the right. Delicate outlines of bellflowers drift across the pale blue background, reflecting the film’s melancholic undertones. A small inset portrait of co‑star Yoshio Harada appears at the lower left, while Toho’s round logo anchors the composition. It’s a beautiful blend of studio portraiture and painterly design.
