"Laputa: Castle in the Sky" (天空の城ラピュタ), Original Japanese Promotional Poster 1986, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O339

Sale price $300.00

This is an original Japanese promotional B2 poster printed in 1986 for the first theatrical release of Hayao Miyazaki’s landmark Studio Ghibli feature Laputa: Castle in the Sky (天空の城ラピュタ). Produced by Nibariki and Tokuma Shoten for the film’s domestic campaign, this design was distributed as a promotional piece rather than as an in-cinema movie poster — making it scarcer and highly collectible among early Ghibli materials. It marks the very beginning of the Studio Ghibli era, following the success of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), and represents the formative collaboration between Miyazaki, producer Toshio Suzuki, and composer Joe Hisaishi.

Design
A striking image of Pazu and Sheeta clinging to the side of Laputa’s floating ruins, symbolising the film’s themes of courage, love, and discovery. The tagline reads “Love & Dream Adventure”, with the word “LAPUTA” expanded below into:
L – Love
A – Action
P – Powerful
U – Unique
T – Tenderly
A – Adventure
The composition perfectly embodies Miyazaki’s signature balance of dynamism and tenderness, capturing the sense of wonder that defines early Ghibli works. The copyright credit “© Nibariki–Tokuma Shoten” confirms its authenticity and original issue.
