"Standing in the Shadows of Motown", Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 2002, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) N90

Sale price $100.00

This is an original Japanese poster printed in 2002 for the first release of Standing in the Shadows of Motown (永遠のモータウン), the award-winning documentary directed by Paul Justman.

The film celebrates The Funk Brothers, the uncredited and largely unknown session musicians responsible for the signature sound of countless Motown hits. Featuring performances and interviews with surviving members of the group, the documentary also includes appearances by Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye (archival), Chaka Khan, Ben Harper, Bootsy Collins, Meshell Ndegeocello, Joan Osborne, Gerald Levert, Montell Jordan, and Tom Scott. The soundtrack and film were widely acclaimed, winning two Grammy Awards in 2003 (Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance and Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media) and earning the 2002 National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Non-Fiction Film.

The Japanese B2-size poster features a striking pop-art design dominated by bold orange and yellow tones with blue silhouettes of The Funk Brothers and Stevie Wonder, echoing the retro vibrancy of the Motown era. Japanese release text at the top and bottom of the poster provides further cultural context for its domestic theatrical run.
