“Little Buddha” (リトル・ブッダ), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1994, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) — T167
This is an original Japanese B2 poster produced for the 1994 Japanese theatrical release of Little Buddha, Bernardo Bertolucci’s visually sumptuous exploration of faith, reincarnation and discovery. Featuring Keanu Reeves, Bridget Fonda and Chris Isaak, the film combines a contemporary family story with a retelling of the life of Siddhartha Gautama.
Film background
Originally produced in 1993, Little Buddha follows a young Seattle boy whose ordinary life changes when Tibetan Buddhist monks identify him as a possible reincarnation of their deceased teacher. His journey unfolds alongside the story of Prince Siddhartha, played by Keanu Reeves, and his path towards enlightenment.
Bertolucci reunites with cinematographer Vittorio Storaro and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, collaborators on The Last Emperor. Their photography and music give the film its distinctive atmosphere, moving between contemporary America and the richly coloured landscapes and religious traditions of South Asia.
Poster design
A luminous photographic montage centres on a large portrait of the young boy, his dark hood framing his face. Surrounding images bring together Reeves as Siddhartha, Himalayan peaks, Seattle’s skyline, Buddhist ceremonies and scenes of family life, capturing the film’s movement between different places and eras.
The sweeping red Japanese title stands out against a pale background, while a striking photograph across the bottom shows the blond child looking back from a sea of monks’ crimson robes. Warm golds, soft blues and vivid reds give the composition a rich, inviting presence.
